Your EMG visit

What to expect, step by step

Most nerve studies take 30 to 60 minutes. You can drive yourself home and go back to normal activities right away.

01

Check-in & history

Your neurologist asks about your symptoms and does a brief exam to decide which nerves and muscles to test.

02

Nerve conduction

Small sticker electrodes are placed on your skin and brief electrical pulses are applied. It feels like a quick tap or static shock.

03

Needle EMG

A very thin sterile needle records muscle activity at rest and while you gently tighten the muscle. Discomfort is usually mild and brief.

04

Results

The doctor reviews the findings with you before you leave, and a full report goes to your referring provider within two business days.

Before you come: shower the morning of the test. Skip lotions, oils and creams on arms and legs. Wear loose sleeves. Tell us if you take blood thinners or have a pacemaker.
